PLANNING A SUMMER WEDDING: HEAT, BUGS, WEATHER AND EVERYTHING NO ONE WARNS YOU ABOUT

Summer weddings are gorgeous for a reason. Long golden evenings, lush green landscapes, flowers everywhere, and that relaxed, celebratory energy that only warm weather brings. In the Hudson Valley especially, summer can feel like pure magic — mountains hazy in the distance, fireflies at dusk, cocktails outside, dancing under the stars.

But summer also comes with… logistics.

As a documentary wedding photographer, I’m not here to scare you off a summer date — some of the most joyful, alive-feeling weddings I photograph happen in July and August. The key is planning for comfort so you can actually enjoy your day instead of surviving it.

Hudson Valley Heat Is Real (Especially Midday)

If your ceremony is outdoors between noon and 4 PM, it will likely be hot. Not “pleasantly warm.” Hot.

Guests in formal attire, wedding parties standing in direct sun, and couples in layered clothing can start to fade quickly — which affects everything from energy levels to how long portraits feel manageable.

What helps:

  • Late-afternoon or early-evening ceremony times

  • Shade (trees, sailcloth tents, covered structures)

  • Cold drinks available before the ceremony

  • Programs that double as fans

  • Breathable fabrics for attire

If possible, aim for ceremony start times around 5–6 PM. Not only is it cooler, but the light is dramatically more flattering.

Outdoor Doesn’t Mean Risk-Free

One of the beautiful things about Hudson Valley venues is how much of the experience happens outside — lawns, patios, river views, mountain overlooks.

But summer weather can change quickly.

Heat waves, pop-up thunderstorms, humidity, or sudden wind are all normal. The best venues plan for this, but it’s worth confirming exactly what the backup plan looks like and how quickly it can be implemented.

A tent is not just a rain plan — it’s a sun plan.

Clear-top tents are stunning, but they can trap heat earlier in the day. Sailcloth tents tend to breathe better. Fans, open sides, and good airflow make a huge difference.

Humidity Changes Everything

Humidity doesn’t just make the air feel heavy — it affects hair, makeup, clothing, and comfort.

Professional hair and makeup artists plan for this, but you can help by:

  • Scheduling touch-up time before the ceremony

  • Having blotting papers and powder on hand

  • Choosing hairstyles that tolerate moisture

  • Keeping indoor, air-conditioned spaces available

For suits and dresses, lightweight fabrics are your friend. Formal doesn’t have to mean sweltering.

Bugs Are Part of the Landscape

Mosquitoes, gnats, and other tiny party crashers love warm evenings, especially near water, gardens, or wooded areas (which describes… most Hudson Valley venues).

You don’t need to declare war on nature — just plan thoughtfully.

Guest-friendly options:

  • Discreet insect-repellent stations

  • Citronella candles around seating areas

  • Fans, which help keep bugs away

  • Avoiding heavily scented florals near dining areas

Many venues also treat their grounds in advance, so it’s worth asking what they typically do.

Timing Is Everything for Light

Summer gives you long days — which is wonderful, but it also means sunset happens later than you think.

Golden hour portraits might not happen until 8:00 or even 8:30 PM in late June. Planning a short window during dinner or dancing for sunset photos can be incredibly worthwhile. The light is soft, romantic, and glowy in a way that midday sun simply isn’t.

And if you love the idea of outdoor dancing or fire pits, twilight in summer is hard to beat.

Keep Guests Comfortable = Keep the Energy High

When guests are comfortable, they stay present. They mingle, laugh, dance, and actually enjoy themselves — which shapes the entire atmosphere of your wedding.

Small touches go a long way:

  • Welcome drinks when guests arrive

  • Lots of water - more than you think

  • Shaded lounge areas

  • Hydration stations

  • Late-night treats like ice cream or popsicles

  • Flip-flops or basket of sandals for dancing

Comfort isn’t just practical — it’s hospitality.

The Magic That Makes It Worth It

Despite the logistics, summer weddings have a vibrancy that’s hard to replicate in any other season.

Kids running on the lawn. Bare shoulders and linen suits. Music drifting into the warm night air. Fireflies blinking on as the sky darkens. That feeling that no one wants the night to end.

From a storytelling perspective, summer weddings often feel expansive, joyful, and alive.

My Honest Advice as a Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer

Plan for comfort first. Beauty follows.

Choose a ceremony time that respects the heat. Make sure there’s shade. Have a real weather backup. Build in moments to step inside and cool down. Trust your vendors — we’ve seen it all and want you to feel good, not just look good.

When couples are comfortable, relaxed, and present, the photographs take care of themselves.
