WEDDING AT THE GARRISON | HUDSON VALLEY EVENT VENUE
There's something about a fall wedding at The Garrison that feels almost unfair to the rest of the year — the Hudson Highlands on fire with color, that amber afternoon light, and a couple so completely present with each other that every frame seems to write itself.
When Jack and Melissa chose The Garrison for their wedding, they chose one of the most breathtaking fall venues in the Hudson Valley. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of the Hudson River and the mountains beyond — and on this particular autumn afternoon, the hillsides were blazing in gold, amber, and crimson. It was the kind of setting that makes a photographer's heart leap.
But honestly? The setting wasn't even the best part of the day.
Getting Ready
A Morning Full of Anticipation
The morning started quietly and beautifully on both sides. Melissa got ready with her mother and closest friends, the room full of laughter and the occasional happy tear. Her gown — a floral lace bodice over sheer illusion fabric with a sweeping satin skirt — was stunning in the way that feels completely effortless. Her mother helped with the final buttons, sharing a moment of pure joy that needed no words.
Jack, meanwhile, was getting ready with a grin that never really left his face all day. His look was a stroke of inspired confidence: a rich forest green suit, a boldly patterned paisley tie, and an autumn boutonnière by Maple Field Floral. He looked like he belonged to the season.
The First Look
He Completely Fell Apart (in the best way)
I'll say it plainly: this was one of the best first looks I have ever photographed at The Garrison. Jack and Melissa chose to see each other before the ceremony, and they did it in front of a wall of blazing red Japanese maple on the grounds. Jack turned around — and immediately reached for his handkerchief. He was overcome before he'd even fully taken her in. Melissa laughed and absolutely glowed. Neither of them could speak for a moment.
He reached for his handkerchief before he'd even fully turned around. That kind of love doesn't need a caption.
Portraits
Golden Hour in the Hudson Highlands
After the first look, we had time for portraits — and The Garrison in peak fall delivered everything. Golden canopies overhead, rolling hillsides, mountain views in every direction, and that warm late-afternoon Hudson Valley light that makes every frame feel like it was painted. Jack and Melissa were completely effortless to photograph. They wandered, danced a little, leaned into each other, and forgot about the camera — which is always when the best pictures happen.
Melissa's bouquet, designed by Maple Field Floral, was a showpiece in itself: dahlias, ranunculus, and lush greenery in coral, peach, deep burgundy, and burnt orange. It was made for this season and it showed in every single frame.
The Reception
Lights, Dancing, and a Very Good Cake
As the sun dipped behind the Highlands, The Garrison transformed. String lights draped overhead, candles flickered on every table, and Maple Field Floral's arrangements spilled warmly from every corner. The wedding cake was a three-tiered showstopper — white buttercream with hand-painted blooms in coral, peach, and burgundy. DJ Karin Fjellman kept the floor packed from the first song to the last. Melissa hiked up her gown and matched the crowd move for move. Jack had his jacket off and his arms in the air.
The family moments wove themselves through the whole evening in the best way — Melissa sharing a completely joyful moment with her grandmother, Jack pulling his mom onto the dance floor, both of them unable to hold it together for even a second.
And somewhere between the toasts and the dancing, Jack and Melissa slipped outside to sit together by a fire pit. Just the two of them, the flames, and the warm glow of the reception behind the glass. It might be my favorite image from the entire night.
Why The Garrison
One of the Best Fall Wedding Venues in the Hudson Valley
I've photographed many weddings at The Garrison, and fall at this venue is simply in a category of its own. The panoramic Hudson River views, the mountain backdrop, the grounds turning amber and crimson — beauty is everywhere you point a camera. But what made this day truly unforgettable wasn't the scenery. It was Jack and Melissa — their openness, their emotion, their humor, and the way they never once stopped being present with each other and the people they love.
