WEDDING AT BASILICA HUDSON IN HUDSON, NEW YORK
BASILICA HUDSON WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
A summertime celebration at one of the Hudson Valley's most iconic industrial wedding venues
Some venues fade into the background of a wedding day, and then some venues become part of the story itself. Basilica Hudson is firmly the latter. Set inside a restored 19th‑century factory at the edge of the Hudson River in Hudson, New York, Basilica Hudson is raw, dramatic, and filled with the kind of light that makes a photographer's job feel effortless. The exposed brick walls, soaring steel beams, and enormous factory windows create an atmosphere that no amount of décor alone could manufacture. When a couple reaches out to me about photographing a Basilica Hudson wedding, I already know the day is going to be something special.
Getting Ready in Hudson, NY
The morning of a Basilica Hudson wedding almost always begins somewhere along Warren Street — Hudson's main drag, lined with galleries, antique shops, and some of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. Many couples choose to get ready at one of the town's boutique hotels, and it's easy to see why. The Maker Hotel, The Wick, and the Rivertown Lodge all offer layered, design-forward interiors that are a natural visual complement to what Basilica Hudson does architecturally - but none are quite like The Maker Hotel. The Maker Hotel offers rich surfaces and textures, deep colors, beautiful light and a one of a kind experience.
Portraits Around Hudson Before the Ceremony
One of the best things about a Basilica Hudson wedding is the town itself. Hudson is compact and deeply walkable, which means portrait time doesn't have to mean a long drive to a separate location. We slipped out for about 30 minutes before guests arrived — a quick walk at the historic Hudson Amtrak station just down from the venue, and a few quiet frames near the riverfront. In summer, the Hudson Valley light in the late afternoon is unlike anywhere else — golden, hazy, soft. It falls beautifully on the warm brick architecture of downtown Hudson, and it turns the stretch of river behind the Basilica into something that looks almost painted. By the time we returned to the venue, both of them were relaxed and laughing and happy to see their dog, exactly how you want a couple to feel just before they get married.
Ceremony in the North Hall
Most ceremonies at Basilica Hudson take place in the North Hall, and there's a good reason for that. The space is dramatic but intimate — elevated steps at the far end of the hall create a natural focal point, and when the late afternoon sun moves through the large factory windows, it creates a warm, directional glow that lands softly on everything it touches. This couple chose the North Hall and kept the setup spare: rows of simple chairs, a few clusters of summer florals, and the building did the rest of the work. As the ceremony began, the room fell completely quiet. Vows were exchanged in front of 120 guests who had traveled from New York City, the Hudson Valley, and beyond. I moved slowly around the edges of the room, photographing the reactions of parents, the clasped hands of friends in the front row, and the way the couple kept stealing glances at each other even in the middle of their own wedding.
Cocktail Hour and the Grounds
Cocktail hour at Basilica Hudson bar spreads naturally outdoors on a beautiful day. Guests found their way to the bar, wandered outside to take in the views, and gathered in clusters on the grounds as the summer heat softened into a warm evening. This is one of the things I love most about photographing weddings here — there's no rigid traffic flow pushing everyone into one room. The 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space means guests can breathe, explore, and settle wherever feels right. I used this time to continue working, catching candid portraits and group moments, and squeezing in a few more quiet frames with the couple as the cocktail hour hummed around them.
Dinner and Dancing in the Main Hall
The Main Hall at Basilica Hudson is one of the most spectacular reception spaces in the Hudson Valley. At 6,000 square feet with soaring industrial ceilings, it can hold up to 325 seated guests while still feeling cohesive and warm. Long farm tables ran the length of the room, candlelight flickered against the exposed brick, and a lush floral installation framed the head table in a way that felt completely at home in the building's architectural DNA. Speeches came after the first course — the kind of toasts that shift back and forth between sharp humor and genuine emotion, leaving guests laughing one minute and quietly wiping their eyes the next. I stayed close, working through a long lens to catch expressions without interrupting the room. Then the tables cleared, the lights shifted, and the dance floor opened. At Basilica Hudson, there is no sound cutoff, no venue curfew, no 11 pm scramble. The party simply continues until the last guests are ready to call it a night. By the time the evening wound down, guests were still on the floor, still deep in conversation at the bar, still making the most of a summer night in Hudson that none of them wanted to end.
Why Basilica Hudson Is One of My Favorite Venues
I've photographed weddings across the Hudson Valley for many years, and Basilica Hudson occupies a category of its own. The building has an identity that's strong enough to hold any wedding vision — whether a couple brings in elaborate florals and lighting design, or keeps the décor deliberately minimal and lets the architecture speak. The couples who choose it tend to be design-minded, creative, and more interested in authenticity than convention. The combination of the venue, the town of Hudson, and the surrounding Hudson Valley landscape gives the photography an incredible range — industrial interiors, riverfront light, historic brick streets, and mountain views. For couples planning a Basilica Hudson wedding, this is a day that photographs beautifully from the very first morning frame to the last song of the night.
